The calendar may be getting bigger than ever, but Jost Capito still believes it used to be harder working in Formula 1 in the past.

Next season will consist of a record total of 23 rounds, causing many to be concerned about the strain such a high workload will put on staff members of the teams.

As well as an enormous amount of travelling, they’ll also have to handle multiple double and triple headers, giving them less time to spend at home than ever before.

Some team principals have been particularly outspoken about the matter and have called for the sport to make the schedule less busy again in the future.

TheWilliamsboss, Capito, isn’t one of them though and isn’t worried. In fact, with no curfews and more testing sessions, he thinks the workloads in the past were higher than they will be next year.

“When I used to be in Formula 1, we still had 40 tests,” he said as per motorsport-total.com.

“Of course, there were test teams, but parts of the racing team also took part in the tests. There was also no curfew on the race weekends. Boys worked 24/7.

“I’m sure it was a lot harder to work in Formula 1 back then.”

McLarenteam principal Andreas Seidl is one of those that is most strongly against the larger calendar and has said on multiple occasions that he wants 20 races and no more.

Given that, it’s little surprise that he doesn’t agree with Capito’s comments, and doesn’t think that drawing comparisons with past eras is a useful exercise.

The German was part of the paddock at the time, working for BMW from 2000 to 2009, and feels that how things worked back then wasn’t sustainable in the long run.

“Those were different times, a different generation,” he said.

“I was there at the time, too. But I wouldn’t say that it was particularly sustainable what we did there. I don’t think that comparing it with 20 years ago would be useful. ”

“The 23 races that are planned are a huge burden on people. It’s great to have such a calendar and that so many countries and regions are interested in Formula 1.

“So it’s now up to […] us teams to take on the challenge together with our staff and to find ways to make this calendar manageable.”
