Magnussen: Qualy crash was ’embarrassing’

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen said that he found his crash during Q1 at the Japanese Grand Prix “quite embarrassing”.

With Typhoon Hagibis passing through the day before, gusty winds were still around the Suzuka circuit for qualifying on Sunday morning.

Robert Kubica was the first to be caught out, crashing at the last corner early in Q1, before Magnussen shortly after the re-start was thrown off by a gust of wind and met the same fate.

“I went on the power, I had full throttle, and then suddenly I got wheelspin, and spun around, which was unfortunate and quite embarrassing really,” he toldCrash.net.

“I just didn’t expect to get such a big gust of wind there right in the tail. Showed everyone what not to do.”

Magnussen would start the race P19, recovering only to P17 ahead of the Williams’ and the Danish driver admitted that starting so far down the order cost him.

“If we had hooked everything up, if I had started up where I should have and got as good a start as I did get, then I would have been in a much better position,” he explained.

“And probably with a better pit stop and strategy, we could have scored some points. It’s frustrating.”

Magnussen has joined the growing list of drivers who thoughtthat format was better than the usual three-day one.

“Yeah, absolutely,” he said when asked if he would like Formula 1 to change to a two-day programme.

“It’s been a really fun day, very interesting and very intense. I’d love to see this be the way forward in the future.”
