Lewis Hamilton reveals major new development in Mercedes contract talks

Could a new Mercedes contract be signed, sealed and delivered for Lewis Hamilton as soon as Monday? It is a topic which may well come up when he meets team boss Toto Wolff.

For a time the Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari chatter had bubbled back up, especially when ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix a report emerged that claimed Ferrari had made an approach worth £40 million per season.

That was soon shut down by Hamilton, his Mercedes team and Ferrari, with the seven-time champ repeating his consistent stance that he does not see himself anywhere other than Mercedes.

But the chatter cannot be fully put to bed while a new contract remains elusive, Hamilton’s deal as it stands up come the end of 2023.

Hamilton was asked then after the Spanish Grand Prix, which he finished P2, whether he would still be in the car when Mercedes put their 2024 challenger on the track?

Well, still nothing has been signed, but the Brit is due to meet with his boss Wolff tomorrow, which may well bring about confirmation at last.

“I haven’t signed anything yet,” Hamilton confirmed. “I think I’m meeting Toto tomorrow so hopefully we can get something done.”

Both Mercedes and Ferrari have launched major upgrade packages for their 2023 challengers in a bid to reel in the dominant Red Bull team, and the Spanish GP suggested that Mercedes are the ones to have taken the clear step forward.

While Max Verstappen was still untouchable in the Red Bull, Hamilton and team-mate George Russell comfortably had the beating of Ferrari and Aston Martin as they joined Verstappen on the podium.

And so Sky F1 pundit Naomi Schiff believes Mercedes are the team Hamilton will continue to bet on as he searches for that record eighth World title, with the lack of confirmation a sign of how relaxed he is about the situation.

“There was obviously a lot of speculation about Ferrari, we know that’s been put to bed completely,” she said.

“I think he’s been very vocal about the fact that he wants to leave a legacy with the team and he seems really relaxed there about the fact that it’s not signed yet, he might meet with Toto tomorrow, it might get done, it might not.

“But ultimately, I don’t think he’s going anywhere for a while so I don’t think any of us need to panic. That’s why he’s not panicking either, because it’s going to get done, it’s just a matter of time.”

That P2 for Hamilton and P3 for Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix lifted Mercedes to P2 in theConstructors’ Championship, the team now boasting an advantage of 18 points over Aston Martin.
