Tost talks up Gasly for move to a top team

Pierre Gaslyhas everything it takes to become a successful F1 driver for Red Bull or another top team, according to AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost.

It could have been a long way back for Gasly after being traded out by Red Bull halfway through the 2019 campaign for Alex Albon, but the Frenchman has instead worked hard to prove his worth.

Last season, he repeatedly showed the strength of his ability at the wheel with some very impressive performances, none more so than his memorable first victory in Formula 1 at the Italian Grand Prix.

He was well ahead of his team-mate Daniil Kvyat over the campaign, finishing 43 points in front of the Russian.

Nevertheless, Gasly’s performances were not enough to earn him his spot back with Christian Horner’s men, Sergio Perez the man charged with replacing Albon who was dropped to reserve driver.

AlphaTauri team principal Tost, wholast month statedRed Bull would fight to keep hold of Gasly if others were to come in for him, is delighted to again have the chance to work with the Frenchman whom he sees as having a very bright future.

“I think it’s good for Pierre to stay here – he loves the team and we love him,”Tost told Gazzetta dello Sport. “And if he shows the same performance as 2020, he will have a chance to go to Red Bull or another competitive team.

“He has everything to become a successful driver.”

Where he will find that success is unknown. Alpine have in the past been rumoured at making a future move for the 25-year-old, butRed Bullare unlikely to let him go if he keeps performing on the track.

Gasly may well be part of a future conversation with Red Bull, as suggested by Tost, and his chances certainly would not be harmed if Max Verstappen was to take up a position elsewhere, with a Mercedes spot potentially opening up in 2022.

Gasly himself has previously said he feels ready to regain his seat with Horner’s outfit. But with that now unlikely for at least another year, all he can do is continue impressing on track.
