Piastri wins his second Sir Jack Brabham Award

Formula 2 champion and Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri has become only the second person in history to win two Sir Jack Brabham Awards.

The award is considered one of Motorsport Australia’s most prestigious honours, recognising the success and outstanding achievements of a native racer on the global stage.

Piastri certainly fits the bill, with the Aussie now on a streak of three consecutive titles in junior racing.

After collecting the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup crown, Piastri followed that up by taking the 2020 Formula 3 title before becoming the 2021 Formula 2 champion in dominant fashion.

Despite 2021 being his rookie F2 campaign, Piastri claimed six race wins and a further five podium finishes, dominating the championship to take the title with a huge 60.5-point margin over runner-up Robert Shwartzman.

Piastri can now add back-to-back Sir Jack Brabham Awards to his growing list of achievements, becoming only the second racer, alongside Will Power, to win the honour twice.

Piastri is, however, the first to claim the award in consecutive years.

He was presented with the award at Albert Park, home of the Australian Grand Prix, and got an early viewing of theredesigned circuitwhich this coming season will host Formula 1 action for the first time since 2019.

Speaking about the achievement, Piastri said: “A big thank you to the Motorsport Australia Board for choosing me as this year’s Sir Jack Brabham Award recipient – it’s quite special knowing I’m in the rare company of people to have won the award twice, with Will Power the only other one.

“While it may not directly compare to the thrill of winning races or the championship title, I’m still very appreciative of these awards because they are linked to my success and are a nice bonus for all my hard work.

“As for my on-track performances, I was amazed I went back-to-back with Formula Renault and Formula 3, but to win three top junior categories was amazing – you really couldn’t have written the script of the past three years any better.

“I’ve had my time to celebrate but now I’m fully focused on a big 2022 and I feel like I’m peaking at the right time.”
