Krack sees Sauber parallels in Aston Martin project

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack can see similarities from his time at Sauber, with an overperforming team receiving a big cash boost that can help them in the future.

Krack was an engineer at Sauber when their partnership with BMW began, with a sudden increase in financial resources becoming available to them as they looked to compete at the front of the field.

Aston Martintook over from Racing Point last season, with a significant investment coming in from team owner Lawrence Stroll in his quest to create a race-winning environment with ‘Team Silverstone’.

The team has traditionally punched above its weight in Formula 1, but around 200 more members of staff have been recruited and a new and improved factory is being constructed, as they look to become championship contenders within the next few years.

Former BMW motorsport boss Krack was describing what attracted him to the team during the process of him becoming team principal, and he said he feels “extremely privileged” to be in his new position – and sees added “possibilities” for the team in the future.

“When I looked at Team Silverstone, or all the names that the team had over the last years, I sensed a little bit the situation as we had with Sauber,” Krack told media including PlanetF1.

“We were in a similar situation where at times, we were really overperforming to our possibilities, and then we had a big partner coming in [BMW] where you, all of a sudden, had possibilities that you never had before. We have something similar here.

“我认为真的是什么ite attractive, besides the factor [Formula 1] is the ‘Champions League’. You have a great bunch of people that know how to use their funds very cleverly, and then you are provided with additional possibilities, so the similarity is quite blatant.

“So this helped me in making the decision [to join], but at the end of the day, it’s just Formula 1per sethat is super, super attractive, then I think there won’t be any better team than this one with all these new challenges, these new possibilities we are having, so I’m extremely privileged.”

The team finished a distant seventh place in last season’s Constructors’ Championship, andKrack admittedthat if he wants to keep Sebastian Vettel in the sport beyond 2022, Aston Martin are going to have to provide the four-time World Champion with a competitive car to drive.

They completed three days of running in Barcelona last week and, while the competitive order is yet to be established, the official pre-season test in Bahrain may give a clearer indicator of where they stand in the early stages of 2022.
