Bottas and Ocon join Virtual Grand Prix series

Valtteri Bottas excited to see Mercedes' 2020 "weapon" for the first time.

A total of eight current Formula 1 drivers will be involved in the latest round of the Virtual Grand Prix series at Monaco this Sunday.

George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, Lando Norris, Antonio Giovinazzi and Nicholas Latifi have been the usual suspects in Formula 1’s official series using the F1 2019 game produced by Codemasters.

The likes of Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Romain Grosjean have also taken part in some virtual races but have so far not got involved in the Virtual Grand Prix.

However, there will be two new Formula 1 faces on the virtual streets ofMonte Carlowith Bottas and Ocon signed up and racing for their respective Mercedes and Renault teams.

“The Virtual Grand Prix series has proven to be a fantastic live spectacle with over 20m viewers to date, providing fans with some racing entertainment during these challenging times,” Julian Tan, head of digital business initiatives and esports said.

“We are delighted to announce our strongest line-up of current F1 drivers alongside a star-studded list of global talent from the worlds of sport and entertainment, as we all stand together to put on great racing entertainment around the historic streets of Monaco, virtually.”

As for the star-studded list of global talent, Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is partnering Norris at McLaren, while Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is back in action for Alfa Romeo.

Surfer Kai Lenny is joining forces with Albon at Red Bull and Latin American singer Luis Fonsi will make his debut for Racing Point.

The virtual Monaco Grand Prix gets underway with qualifying at 1800 BST on Sunday. UK viewers can watch on Sky Sports F1 and the race will also be streamed for free on various streaming platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Twitch.
