Kvyat would be a ‘good candidate’ for Williams

Having officially dropped Daniil Kvyat from the Red Bull programme, Christian Horner reckons he would be a “good candidate” for a Williams race-seat.

Kvyat raced his final grand prix as a Toro Rosso driver last time out at the United States GP, finishing P10.

But even that point-scoring result wasn’t enough to save his career with the Russian driver dropped two days later from the Mexican GP roster, and then the Red Bull roster altogether.

His late axing has left Kvyat with very few options with only Williams and back-of-the-grid Sauber with seats available for next season.

“Unfortunately with Red Bull things have come to a close [for Kvyat],” Horner told Sky Sports.

“But I would hope that he has done enough to earn himself a seat elsewhere.

“There’s still obviously a Williams seat available and I would have thought he’d be a good candidate for that.”

Asked whether Kvyat’s promotion to Red Bull in 2015 had come too early for the driver, who had spent just one season at Toro Rosso prior to that, the Red Bull team boss replied: “It’s always a difficult one, you have to grab the opportunity when you have it.

“Obviously Sebastian [Vettel] went to Ferrari, which created a seat, and Daniil was the guy who got that chance.

“In 2015 I thought he did a pretty respectable job, and then 2016 was a difficult year for him.

“Unfortunately that was the end of his time at Red Bull, but he got a second opportunity at Toro Rosso.”
