The announcement may have stated that Fernando Alonso will “contest the 2018 championship” with McLaren, however, the Spaniard says his new contract is a “long-term” deal.

McLarenannounced on Thursdaythat Alonso had re-signed for next season putting an end to speculation about the Spaniard’s future.

But while the team confirmed that he would race alongside Stoffel Vandoorne in 2018, there was no mention of the duration of the contract.

“We never discuss the contract clauses and we are not going to do it now, but it’s a long-term contract and we’ll see how things go.

“But I’m very excited for next year, with different expectations, and keen to put McLaren back where it deserves to be. I want Australia to arrive already.”

With McLaren switching to Renault power next season, the double World Champion is looking forward to a brighter future.

He added: “I took my time to really study everything that I could and we see in the last races that Red Bull were on the podium with both cars in Malaysia and Suzuka.

“We know what the Renault engine can do and that gives us extra confidence.”

On a weekend where Pirelli’s tyres are set to turn pink for breast cancer awareness, Alonso wore a bright pink McLaren cap during the press conference.
