The Zandvoort marshals tried to make Daniel Ricciardo’s evening a little better by gifting him a Dutch delicacy.

The Australian was transported to hospital after an early crash in FP2 caused a possible injury to his right hand.

The incident occurred at Turn 3 after Oscar Piastri had spun into the banked wall and the marshals who returned the AlphaTauri left a gift for when Ricciardo was back in the paddock.

When the AT04 was carried back to the AlphaTauri garage, the team found a note on it reading:

“嗨,丹尼尔,希望你的手腕是好的!我们想e you back in the car this weekend. Hope the stroopwafel is in one piece. Kind regards from Turn 3 marshals.”

Underneath the note was a bag of the Dutch delicacy stroopwafel, a combination of two dough wafers with sweet syrup inside.

The marshals need not have worried whether Ricciardo was a fan of the gift as he was spotted helping himself to one on Thursday before the race weekend.

For the time being, Ricciardo remains in hospital as he undergoes an X-ray on his wrist. After he exited the car, the Australian was seen grabbing his ungloved hand as he left the track.

AlphaTauri indicated that Ricciardo was okay but was going to hospital to complete tests which could not be done trackside.

However Helmut Marko later suggested it was worse than first feared and that they will wait to see how he is before discussing a replacement.

“We don’t know exactly what it is yet, but he was in a lot of pain,” Marko told Viaplay. “His wrist has suffered damage, but we have to wait for a diagnosis. He’s in the hospital.

“This is a new situation for us. We first wait to see how Ricciardo is doing and whether he can drive or not. Then we discuss it [who gets in the car].”

Potential candidates for the seat would be Liam Lawson, who is in the paddock this weekend, or a surprise return for native Nyck de Vries who was in the car just three races ago.
