Mercedes reserve Mick Schumacher has got behind the wheel of the W14 for the first time and completed a whopping 152 laps at the Circuit de Catalunya.

After his two-season association with Haas came to an end at the close of the 2022 campaign, Schumacher was offered a vital lifeline in Formula 1 as Mercedes brought him into the fold as their reserve driver.

As well as being on standby for Mercedes and their customer team McLaren, Schumacher is also playing an important role behind the scenes at Mercedes in the simulator, with both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell having praised the impact of his work in their impressive showing at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Following the race weekend though it was Schumacher’s turn to go from the simulator to driving the real-life W14 around the track where Hamilton and Russell had used it to impressive effect just a few days ago.

The grey clouds remain it seems after a weekend of changeable weather, but just like on race day, the rain was holding off for Schumacher as he drove out of the garage and took that Mercedes W14 into action on the track for his first experience at the wheel as part of a Pirelli tyre test.

And with that, Schumacher was back out there on the track, “doing what he loves” once more.

And he had the track all to himself to enjoy the experience at the wheel of his B-Spec W14 challenger.

Schumacher would no doubt love to one day come flying down the straight like this in active competition representing Mercedes, but while time will tell whether that opportunity comes, for now he got a taste of that feeling.

By Wednesday afternoon, Schumacher’s day was done with over 150 laps racked up as part of an extensive testing programme. a job well done for Mick who will now turn his attentions towards helping Mercedes ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix next weekend.
