Alex Albon took great delight in having the quickest lap of a chaotic Canadian qualifying session.

Rain meant qualifying for the Montreal race was more of a challenge than usual as both drivers and teams constantly consulted about their tyre choice.

It was inters for the majority of the session but there was a small window early in Q2 that allowed drivers to get onto the soft slicks and set a time, a move that was ultimately crucial in deciding who would get to Q3.

Albon was one of those to sneak through, the first time he has done so since the Australian Grand Prix, and enjoyed reminding everyone that his 1:18.725 was the fastest lap of the day.

“Q2 was great, technically the quickest lap on Saturday so we have the quickest car,” he said with a smile. “Maybe not but it was still a great day.

“Hard work from everyone at the factory to get the upgrades ready for the weekend.”

Albon was left to rue not getting in a quick lap during Q3 but was ultimately happy with how he and the team had performed.

“Saturday done with. As you can imagine a little bit mixed,” Albon said. “It was still a great day. We had an amazing Q1 and an even better Q2.

“And then in Q3, [I] just made a mistake on the only lap we had. The tyres were a little bit cold. They were getting better and then Oscar [Piastri] crashed [and brought out the] red flag and then the track got way too wet.

“So I felt a little bit disappointed on that side but I think we definitely have some positives in there.”
