Norris in the frame for McLaren reserve role

Lando Norris could be named as McLaren’s reserve driver for next season, says racing director Eric Boullier.

While the role has belonged to Jenson Button this season, the Brit is expected to reliquish it as he seeks a full-time ride in another series.

Should he do so, European Formula 3 driver Norris is reportedly the favourite to replace him after impressing McLaren during this year’s post-Hungarian test.

Asked if he could become the team’s reserve, Boullier replied: “It could be.

“If he wins Formula 3, which is very likely, then he will have enough points to get a superlicence.

“I’ve been impressed, yes. The way also he stepped up after his F1 test was nice to see.

“He took a lot of confidence out of this F1 experience and now he just needs to manage it as well.

“He’s in another level where he needs to manage the pressure of the championship, but also not doing more mistakes, being more exposed to the media, he needs to learn this.”
