Horner: Maybe Merc were keen on Jos then

Christian Horner has scoffed at Toto Wolff’s claims that he was never interested in signing Max Verstappen, saying it must have been Jos then.

Despite rumours linking Verstappen to a move to Mercedes, Red Bull announced in Austin that the youngster had extended his contract to include the 2020 season.

Wolff later stated that it was a good decision on Verstappen’s part as Mercedes “never made an offer and we never had a discussion with him.”

Horner appears to have taken that with a pinch of salt.

“Maybe he was just interested in his dad then,” the Red Bull team boss told Sky F1.

“Max came to us and said he was interested in extending and it was obvious we were going to take that opportunity.”

As for Daniel Ricciardo, Horner said: “Daniel hasn’t triggered that discussion yet but it’s something we’ve spoken to him about.

“But he enjoys being in the team and he wants a competitive car.”
