Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz among eight drivers with post-Austrian GP track limits penalties

Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton, amongst others, have each been hit with further time penalties after the Austrian Grand Prix.

The FIA have concluded their investigations into the Austrian Grand Prix track limits violations uncovered during the Austrian Grand Prix as a result of Aston Martin’s protest of the results.

Hours after the race, Aston Martin lodged a protest which was deemed admissible by the stewards, arguing that the race results were not correct as a result of multiple time penalties not being handed out to drivers who had exceeded track limits on multiple occasions.

More drivers hit with time penalties after investigation

While seven drivers were given time penalties during the race itself, the FIA have confirmed further time penalties have now been applied – directly affecting the classification of the Austrian Grand Prix.

Carlos Sainz has been given a further 10-second time penalty – the same penalty handed out to Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon.

Esteban Ocon committed so many track limits violations, on top of his existing time penalty for an unsafe release in the pitlane, that the stewards have hit him with four separate track limits time penalties: Two five-second penalties, as well as two 10-second penalties.

Logan Sargeant was the recipient of a 10-second penalty, Yuki Tsunoda a further five-second penalty, and Nyck de Vries was given two separate penalties: one five-second and one 10-second.

Outlining how penalties were applied, the stewards said a five-second time penalty was applied for four track limits violations, a 10-second applied for a five limit violation, then a ‘reset’ violation was permitted before the counter was restarted for each driver.

Unsurprisingly, the sheer volume of incidents, with an alleged 1,200 incidents requiring evaluation after the 71 laps, has led the stewards to “strongly recommend” a solution be found for the track limits situation at the Red Bull Ring.
