Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris say they have cleared the air after the McLaren team-mates made contact during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The McLaren drivers made contact while fighting over 10th place two weeks ago, with the pair banging wheels at Monza’s first chicane.

Norris went on to finish eighth, with Piastri dropping to 12th after sustaining damage in a separate collision with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

Andrea Stella, the McLaren team principal, was upset by the contact,telling media including PlanetF1.comthat the drivers must always place the team above their own interests when racing on track.

“There should never ever be contact between two McLaren cars,” he said. “There was contact, which doesn’t fit the way we go racing at McLaren.

“What is important is to have clear perimeter as to what you deem acceptable and what you deem unacceptable.

“It’s not an emotional thing. It’s just like you deal with other things, you deal with racing in a similar way. And this is very clear that for any driver, there’s something bigger than them. It’s the team.”

Speaking on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Singapore GP, Piastri and Norris were both ready to move on from the incident.

Asked if he is in the right headspace to bounce back from a challenging weekend in Italy, Piastri told Formula 1: “Yeah, definitely. Obviously, there was a couple of things that didn’t go to plan in Monza, but that was a while ago now in F1 seasons terms.

“We’ve gone through what happened in Monza and we’re all good. We’ve spoken together, with the team as well, so we’re all good and still 100 per cent trusting in each other, so that’s all good.

“Of course, it’s never ideal to have contact but I think there was a few things we could have done maybe a bit better, which we’ve all recognised – myself included – so I’m confident we’ll be fine going forward.”

Norris added: “It’s all good. Obviously, it was close and a little rubbing, but we’re good. I think we respect each other a lot and, of course, we’ve spoken out it, but all’s clear.”

After a disappointing showing by the MCL60 car at Monza, Norris is hopeful that McLaren will shine in the very different surroundings of Singapore having emerged as a front-running force following an aggressive upgrade strategy in July.

He explained: “It’s always tricky coming into the weekend knowing. I guess we have our expectations and we were a little bit better in Monza than maybe we were expecting, especially in the race side of things, which was a good step.

“But it definitely suits us more than Monza and falls back in line with probably one of our better tracks that we’ve been to lately, so I want to have some hopes and say we can have a good, strong result, be best of the rest and things like that.

“Street circuits normally, it’s very close. Maybe not so much Baku, but Monaco is always extremely close from Q1 to Q3.

“I don’t think I can be confident in saying anything at the minute, but it’ll be one of our better tracks and I’m confident we can have a good result no matter what.”
