Jacques Villeneuve is the latest Formula 1 World Champion to join the world of Esports, signing up for The Race’s ‘Legends Trophy’.

The virtual series, whichRubens Barrichello won the most recent raceof, has already featured greats from the sport’s past such as Jenson Button and Emerson Fittipaldi, as well as former IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti.

Villeneuve falls into both of these categories, having won the F1 title in 1997 and the IndyCar one in 1995. Whether he’ll be able to replicate such success on the virtual side of motor-racing is another matter.

“Jacques Villeneuve will compete in this Saturday’s The Race Legends Trophy joining another stellar entry list for the specially organised retro esports event,” The Racesaid in a statement.

“Villeneuve will race against former BAR F1 teammate Jenson Button in the fourth and fifth Legends Trophy races this Saturday.”

“Villeneuve, who celebrates his 49th birthday today, has most recently competed in the NASCAR Whelen Euroseries and the Scandinavian Porsche Carrera Cup in 2019.”

The world will get their first glimpse of Villeneuve’s abilities on Saturday afternoon when the latest race in the Esports series takes place. In it, each driver will go head to head in a McLaren M23, the car Villeneuve’s father, Giles, made his F1 debut in.
