Daniel Ricciardo sidelined with broken wrist as replacement driver named for Dutch GP

Daniel Ricciardo will not be taking part in the rest of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, with AlphaTauri replacing the Australian with Liam Lawson after his Friday practice crash.

Ricciardo was caught up in a strange accident during second practice at Zandvoort, with the Australian hitting the barriers after entering the banked Hugenholtz corner left with nowhere to go as Oscar Piastri had just crashed his McLaren at the same spot.

The Australian driver will not be taking part in the remainder of the weekend, with Red Bull withdrawing the injured driver from the Dutch Grand Prix. Helmut Marko has confirmed that Ricciardo has suffered a broken wrist and will be out of racing for an uncertain length of time.

“He’s broken something in his hand, so he won’t race,” Marko is quoted by Motorsport.com.

“Lawson will drive. It’s difficult for him. It’s a shame because the car is good here.”

Red Bull and AlphaTauri reserve driver Lawson has been given the call-up to take over the AT04 for the rest of the weekend, handing the Kiwi driver his debut race appearance. He’ll jump into the AlphaTauri from the start of FP3, giving him just a single hour of practice time before his maiden qualifying session.

AlphaTauri have confirmed the extent of Ricciardo’s injuries, revealing the Australian suffered a broken metacarpal – an injury that can take up to six weeks to recover from.

“After today’s incident during Free Practice 2 in Zandvoort, in which Daniel Ricciardo hit the barrier at Turn 3, he was brought to the local hospital and further examinations were carried out,” said the team’s statement.

“An X-ray confirmed he sustained a break to a metacarpal on his left hand, and this injury will not allow him to continue his duties, so he will be replaced by the team’s reserve driver Liam Lawson for the remainder of this weekend. The team wishes him all the best for the quickest possible recovery.”
