Pierre Gasly continues to rage at Carlos Sainz’s ‘extremely dangerous and unnecessary’ antics

Pierre Gasly has continued to rage at Carlos Sainz for his “extremely dangerous and unnecessary” block during qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Gasly found himself tripped up by Sainz during the opening qualifying segment at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with the Alpine driver forced to take to the grass to avoid a high-speed collision.

That meant he wasn’t able to make it out of Q1 with the Frenchman qualifying down in 17th place while Sainz went onto finish with the eighth fastest time. He was subsequently hit with a three-place grid penalty but, as Gasly pointed out, that doesn’t help him.

“I’m sitting here in P17 when we have the car and the pace to be in the top 10, eight or even top six in these conditions,” he said as per The Race, adding that Sainz’s penalty is not going to give us back the qualifying we should have had.”

Adamant that the Ferrari driver’s antics were “extremely dangerous”, Gasly continued: “I just think it’s completely unacceptable to be driving the way Carlos did. Just as simple as that.

“Coming up at 300km/h [186mph], he’s sitting at 30km/h [17mph] at the last chicane, just focusing on his own lap. You’re not alone on the racetrack.

“First of all I couldn’t even close the lap which would have put us in the top-six quite easily. And second of all it was extremely dangerous and unnecessary. Just absolutely gutted.”

The Frenchman is convinced he would’ve easily made it into Q2 if not even the final pole position shoot-out were it not for Sainz.

“It impacts my race a lot so it’s just not acceptable,” he said.

“Looking at the data it would have easily put us in P6. Even if they blocked me two or three tenths, it doesn’t matter, at least I can finish my lap and go through easily.

“This was just… you can’t put your car in the worst possible place. At the speed I’m coming just putting himself in a very dangerous position and also myself.”

Gasly admits he’s in for a tough time on Sunday as he looks to work his way into the points.

“我们有一个uphill task in the race from near the back of the grid but, as ever, I’ll be giving it my all to progress towards the points with the aim of coming away with something,”

He’ll start the race P15 on the grid having benefitted from penalties for Lance Stroll and Yuki Tsunoda.
