阿斯顿马丁在why Melbourne 2022 horror show was the ‘best moment’ for team

Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack has explained why the difficulty Aston Martin had in Australia last year eventually turned into their “best moment” as a team.

Aston Martin began the year struggling significantly with the AMR22, with the team not making the most of Formula 1’s regulation reset and languishing towards the back of the field in the early rounds of the season.

Sebastian Vettel also missed the first two races through illness and returned to the cockpit in Melbourne, but a Q1 exit for him was combined with a collision between Lance Stroll and Williams’ Nicholas Latifi, leaving both cars towards the back of the field.

Fortunes did not improve much in the race either, with Vettel crashing out and Stroll only picking his way up to 12th place come the chequered flag.

And Aston Martin team principal Krack admitted it was a tough part of the year for the team, but in a way it also helped galvanise them to make steps forward later on in the season.

“It was a very difficult moment, but I think it was also the best moment for us as a team,” Krack said, as per Motorsport-Total.com.

“Because we all sat down together after what happened and talked in a normal voice.

“It would have been quite easy to completely fall apart as a team, but we really stuck together and decided that we would work our way out of it.

“From that point of view, that’s actually been the highlight of last year for me.”

Though when he was asked about the prospect of taking a third consecutive podium by the time this year’s Australian Grand Prix comes around, Krack was altogether more cautious.

“Let’s wait and see that we won’t have the cars in pieces again,” he said.

What is clear from an Aston Martin perspective is that this kind of progress has been in the planning for a couple of years now, but what will be doubly satisfying for Lawrence Stroll and his board will be that it is now working.

That the team has begun the 2023 season in such fine form is testament not only to the work that has gone on behind the scenes, but of the recruitment strategy Aston Martin have taken bearing fruit.

Having experienced heads such as Martin Whitmarsh at the top of the organisation will help those beneath on their way up the field, and the arrival of Alonso to replace Vettel has brought at the very least a like-for-like replacement in the driving department.

Krack is right to look back at Australia last year and see how far the team have come, because it is a heck of a long way – and they will only want to continue further yet.
