Kubica to drive in Daytona 24 Hours

It has been announced thatRobert Kubicawill drive in the upcoming Daytona 24 Hours in the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Alongside being a reserve driver forAlfa Romeo, Kubica spent 2020 driving for BMW in DTM, picking up one podium and scoring 20 points.

With the manufacturer withdrawing from the series though, the Pole was left without a seat for 2021.

It has now been confirmed that, for the race in Daytona at least, he will join the IMSA SportsCar Championship for the High Class LMP2 squad

“This is a new challenge and experience for me, as I have been focusing mainly on sprint races in the past,” Kubica said as perAutosport.

“Endurance racing requires a different approach: you are sharing the car with your team-mates, with whom I am happy to enter this challenge, and I also look forward to reaching the finish line of this demanding race with them.

“The car is also new, as it is the first time I will race an ORECA LMP2 car, but I hope for a smooth transition, even when sharing the driving time, so we can focus on our work and preparation for the race.”

As for other plans in 2021, he looks set to continue in his Formula 1 role with Alfa Romeo.

在2020, he took part in pre and post-season tests, and also drove in a number of practice sessions during race weekends. If team principal Frederic Vasseur gets his way, the Pole will do so again this year, and maybe even get more time in the car.

“I hope so, but for sure the season was difficult,” he told Autosport when asked if the team planned to keep him for 2021.

“Mainly for Robert because he had to do in parallel the DTM project and Formula 1.

“It was a crazy season, at least a crazy six months. But we would like to have him a little bit more into the car, a little bit more into the simulator to develop our tools.

“He’s fully committed with us, he’s doing a very good job and he showed us [in Bahrain] that the pace is still there.

“I’m very happy to keep Robert in the team for next year.”
