Mick Schumacher gives F1 comeback update amidst continued Williams links

Mick Schumacher has said he would drive for Williams given the opportunity, and is “always ready for action” as he waits on the F1 sidelines.

With a race seat not forthcoming this year after being dropped by Haas, Schumacher said he is giving everything he can to be back in a race seat next season – and is confident he will be able to do so.

“I’m always ready for action,” Schumacher declared toRTL.

“Believe me: I’m working very hard to hopefully be back in the car soon. See you very soon. Next year at the latest. I’m sure something will develop in the near future.”

On the prospect of taking on a seat with Williams, he added: “I would do it, [but] it’s unlikely that something like that will happen.

“After all, there are also contracts that are usually honoured. Basically, I think just about any team is a good option.”

Would Mick Schumacher and Williams be a good fit together?

Mick Schumacher finds himself in a good position in being Mercedes’ reserve driver, in that they have several customer teams and, in theory, could be closer to the front of the queue for them if they find themselves on the driver market.

With the strong links between recent Mercedes departee and new Williams team boss James Vowles as well, there is every chance that the shoe might fit – but there are a couple of stumbling blocks.

First, Logan Sargeant is Williams’ own academy driver in his rookie season with the team, and no doubt they will want that extra investment placed in him to be justified and, as such, he may be afforded more patience if things don’t improve.

Plus, he’s not standing up all that badly against Alex Albon in the first instance, though Albon has received a raft of upgrades first where Sargeant will have to wait a couple of races before they are applied to his car.

But secondly and quite simply, as is always the case in Formula 1, not being on the grid means he cannot show what he can do behind the wheel, and put himself in that ‘shop window’ that teams are after.

Both Haas drivers this season are living proof that strong comebacks are possible in this sport, but both carry significantly more experience than Schumacher, which was part of the reason why Guenther Steiner opted for Nico Hulkenberg this year.

He would have a good team-mate to work against in Albon if he gets the drive, and it is a big ‘if’ at this point, but Schumacher seems a stronger bet than Sargeant at this point for Williams – though there is still plenty of time for him to beat Albon more regularly in his rookie season.
