Lewis Hamilton could this weekend make history with a British Grand Prix win which would also deny Red Bull a new spot in the Formula 1 history books at the same time.

Hamilton certainly knows the way to victory around Silverstone, host of his home race, the British Grand Prix, having done so eight times in his F1 career which is already a record at Silverstone.

A further triumph this season though would see him add yet another record to his already extensive list, while Red Bull will look to nerf those aspirations and re-write the history books in their own right.

Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull go for record wins

If Hamilton was to win the 2023 British Grand Prix, thus marking a ninth victory at Silverstone, then he would break the record for most F1 victories achieved at a single circuit.

Red Bull meanwhile, having now won 10 grands prix in a row thanks to their undefeated start to the F1 2023 campaign, would match McLaren’s tally of 11 in succession back in 1988 if they maintain their unbeaten run this weekend.

And it is safe to say that Max Verstappen is the overwhelming favourite to ensure Red Bull equal that record, having now won the last five grands prix in the all-conquering Red Bull RB19.

Hamilton as it stands holds the joint-record with Michael Schumacher for most victories at one track, his eight at both Silverstone and the Hungaroring matching Schumacher’s eight achieved at Magny-Cours.

And speaking ahead of the British GP race weekend to media including PlanetF1.com, Hamilton had said “I wish it was worth half a second” when asked if, as Nigel Mansell used to say, the home crowd can provide that kind of pace boost?

But what Hamilton and the team will be hoping can produce such a gain is the new front wing brought to Silverstone for the W14.

Hamilton acknowledged it is not a “huge package” for Mercedes, but nonetheless does hope it can take the team another step in the right direction.

“We have a new front wing, so it’s just one step, hopefully, further in the right direction,” he said.

“It’s not a huge new package or anything like that, but we’re just making it step by step, hopefully trying to close down the gap.

“Obviously, Austria was not a nice weekend for us all, but that’s where we learn the most, that’s when we pull together the most as a team.”

Hamilton has not tasted victory in Formula 1 now since the penultimate round of the 2021 campaign.
