While his son enjoyed a weekend off, Jos Verstappen was in the car for his latest Ypres Rally outing.

Verstappen and his co-pilot Renaud Jamoul competed on Friday and Saturday in the Ypres Rally which is part of the Belgian Rally Championship but would end the event in 13th after some problems.

Driving his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2-car, Verstappen suffered two punctures which all but ruined his chances of finishing high up the standings.

“I still managed to finish the rally, after suffering two punctures, good classification was therefore not possible, so I didn’t take any risks on Saturday,” Verstappen said.

“The rally in Ypres is difficult, especially when you’re not from around here, like me. The stages are really tricky. But it got better and better, and I gained a lot of experience again.”

The event is split across four stages, called Westouter, Kemmelberg, Mesen-Middelhoek and Langemark, and were each held twice on Friday. After a P12 and P9, it was in the third stage where Verstappen had difficulties and suffered his first puncture.

“我们有点uncomfortable at the start of the first stages, because we were not familiar with them,” Verstappen said. “The puncture was just bad luck, and we lost 40 seconds there. Too bad, but it is what it is.”:

In the remaining stages, the team finished P12, P10, P6, P9 and P8 which led to a P12 in the general classification at the end of day one.

But Verstappen’s bad luck would continue into the Saturday when he again picked up a puncture, requiring a tyre change and meaning they lost almost three minutes.

Verstappen finished successively P11, P11 and P9 in Saturday’s first round, followed by P11, P12, P8 and P13 in the second round. He finished the day with P12 and P14, after which he ended the Ypres Rally in thirteenth place overall.

It was Verstappen’s first rally appearance since the Sezoens Rally in May. In that event, Verstappen finished second and earned himself 18 championship points.
