Former F1 driver Timo Glock believes 2023 rookie Oscar Piastri is emerging as a potential future World Champion alongside Lando Norris at McLaren.

After McLaren’s muted start to the season, Piastri has established himself as a star of the future in recent months following the team’s aggressive upgrade plan.

Following impressive single-lap performances at Silverstone and Spa in July, Piastri qualified on the front row of the grid at last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, pipping Norris to second spot by four hundredths of a second.

Norris, now in his fifth full season, reasserted his status as McLaren’s team leader on the race day, finishing 17 seconds ahead of his team-mate as Piastri scooped his first podium finish.

Glock, who made 91 grand prix starts for the likes of Toyota and Marussia between 2004 and 2012, says it is clear that Norris still has the upper hand over Piastri – but believes the Australian will grow into a force to be reckoned with.

Assessing the Suzuka weekend in hisSky Germany column,格洛克写道:“至于奥斯卡Piastri,你必须be full of praise, of course. He is doing excellently in his rookie season.

“It’s clear that he’s still behind team-mate Lando Norris in the race, but if he continues like this he’s also putting himself in position to become one of those who could one day become World Champion.

“With Norris, he now has a very good team partner to compete with and where you can see that there is still room for improvement in terms of race pace.

“With him, anything is possible.”

Piastri was signed by McLaren as Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement for the 2023 season after a bitter row with Alpine, who funded the 22-year-old’s junior career and appointed him as reserve driver last year.

The Melbourne-born star, who is managed by nine-time grand prix winner and former Red Bull star Mark Webber, originally came to prominence after winning the F3 and F2 titles in consecutive seasons in 2020/21.

The F2 (previously GP2) crown had previously been claimed by such names as seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and 2016 title winner Nico Rosberg as well as current Mercedes and Ferrari drivers George Russell and Charles Leclerc.
