Sirotkin wasn’t in Abu Dhabi for the ‘sun’

Sergey Sirotkin is hoping that his Williams tests results in a 2018 race-seat, saying he wasn’t in Abu Dhabi to “enjoy the sun.”

Sirotkin was a surprise call up to Williams’ line-up for the post-season test at the Yas Marina circuit.

The Russian driver, who was cleared by Renault to test with Williams, clocked the team’s best time on the soft tyres with his run 1.3s up on main rival Robert Kubica.

“I want to thank Williams for giving me this opportunity even if I do not know what the future will be,” the 22-year-old told Auto Hebdo.

“What is certain is that I was not there at the test to enjoy the sun.

“I cannot hope for a Renault race-seat in the immediate future for reasons that are external.

“It is a privilege to be able to work with different teams at the highest level and I took advantage of every moment.”

Sirotkin has filled the role of Renault’s reserve driver during 2017 but says it is just not the same as racing.

He added: “It’s really hard not to have a race-seat and be a reserve driver.

“I know I’m learning a lot with the team, but I need the adrenaline. The level of emotions is totally different.”
