Sergio Perez urged to leave Red Bull and ‘show his performance’ elsewhere
Ex-F1 driver Gerhard Berger believes Sergio Perez will be better served leaving Red Bull and emerge from the shadow cast over him by Max Verstappen.
With two race wins and a pretty comfortable P2 spot in the World Championship standings so far this year, those stats would represent a respectable campaign for most F1 drivers.
But, for Perez, that is considered somewhat of a failure when Verstappen has won the other 11 races and sits over 130 points clear at the top of the World Championship standings.
‘Sergio Perez will never consistently beat Max Verstappen’
The gulf in class between the two drivers means there is barely a race weekend goes by without Perez having to face questions about his Red Bull future, even though he does have a contract with the team until the end of the 2024 season.
The uncertainty seeps further as there appears to be an inner conflict at Red Bull about Perez’s place in the team.
Team boss Christian Horner has consistently said on record that Perez will keep his seat for the 2024 season, butHelmut Marko’s comments suggest otherwise.
The current Red Bull situation has 10-time F1 race winner, Berger, reaching the verdict that Perez should take it upon himself to leave the team and show his clear ability against another team-mate not called Max Verstappen, who is in a league of his own.

“If there was a real rival for Max, the gap he has might be a little smaller. But it’s still Max and the car making the difference,”Berger told Speed Week.
“Verstappen is simply in a class of its own. The lead is so glaring that others only come closer on a day when they themselves get a bullseye on the setup and Red Bull is not ideally positioned for once.
“But even then, Max is still pulling it out of the bag.

“If Sergio is intelligent, he will find himself another team where he can break the deadlock and show his performance there. But he will never be able to consistently beat Max.”
