Red Bull issue ‘very clear instruction’ to AlphaTauri ahead of F1 2024 rebrand

Helmut Marko has issued a “very clear instruction” to AlphaTauri after “peculiarities” saw them fall far behind Red Bull.

The two teams are a unique case in Formula 1 as they share the same owners yet while Red Bull has been dominant in this year’s championship, AlphaTauri are currently bringing up the rear.

In recent years, the Italy-based outfit have moved away from their English counterparts but that all changes next year with Marko ordering them to follow Red Bull’s suit.

Since the AlphaTauri rebrand in 2020, the team have moved further and further away from Red Bull, not making the most of the copying allowances Formula 1 teams are permitted.

“There were always differences between Italy and England,” Marko told the Young Economist.

“AlphaTauri sometimes had designers who believed if they had the financial means of Red Bull, they would actually be better.

“This conflict smouldered throughout this cooperation. That’s why it’s now being restructured.”

The end of 2023 will see dramatic changes made to the Faenza outfit and while a move to the UK appears to be no longer on the cards, the team structure will change with Laurent Mekies coming to work alongside the recently appointed CEO Peter Bayer.

The name, which is currently the same as Red Bull’s clothing brand, is also going to change according to Marko with Hugo Boss rumoured to be the front-runner as a title sponsor.

“There is a very clear instruction,” Marko said. “Everything that is permitted by the regulations must be adapted by AlphaTauri.

“No more in-house constructions, no more peculiarities in Faenza. The synergies are to be used as best as possible.”

Current team principal Franz Tost will retire at the end of the year, marking an end to a 17-season career in the role while earning two wins and five podiums.
