Oscar Piastri made light of his previous not so smooth Formula 1 contract announcements after agreeing a new McLaren deal with no dramas.

It was contract shenanigans which, alongside his obvious talent, put Piastri on the map as one of the most intriguing rookies to join the Formula 1 grid in some time when he snubbed Alpine to race with McLaren from F1 2023.

And Piastri has wasted little time in ensuring an extension to his McLaren stay after an extremely impressive rookie campaign so far, with his new deal committing him to the team until the end of 2026, adding two further seasons to his McLaren terms.

Smooth contract announcement as always for Oscar Piastri

It was after Fernando Alonso confirmed his impending move to Aston Martin that a sequence of events were triggered involving Alpine, McLaren and Piastri, a saga which the Aussie poked fun at in a social media post following confirmation of his McLaren contract extension.

“Stress-free contract announcement like always,” he posted.

A huge tone of sarcasm there, as we of course know that was far from the case in the past, which Piastri oh so brilliantly referenced.

But to complete the circle, Alpine themselveseven repliedwith the popular GIF of Homer Simpson slowly backing into a hedge, nothing to see here at all…

Alpine had put out a press release to confirm Piastri as Alonso’s F1 2023 replacement, the Aussie’s response to that having gone down in Formula 1 meme folklore, with Alpine and McLaren then heading to Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Board in a battle for his services, ultimately won by McLaren.

And Piastri is so far showing exactly why McLaren were so desperate to sign him, as the driver who had already shown his ability to seamlessly adapt to a new category, having won the Formula Renault Eurocup, Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in successive seasons, now shines on the Formula 1 stage.

McLaren’s surge up the order to become podium contenders with the upgraded MCL60 has helped Piastri to take his performances to new heights, his crowning achievement so far a P2 finish in the Belgium sprint race, where he fell just 0.011s short of denying runaway Championship leader Max Verstappen sprint pole.

和麦克拉伦set on returning to the title scene in the coming years, seemingly very much on the right path towards that goal, the combination of Lando Norris and Piastri represents one of the strongest anywhere on the grid to mount an F1 title assault.
