Oscar Piastri: First big crash was going to happen at some stage

Oscar Piastri accepts it was a driver error that led to his first big Formula 1 crash with the McLaren rookie hard into the Turn 3 barrier at Zandvoort, and Daniel Ricciardo caught up in his incident.

Piastri’s second practice for the Dutch Grand Prix ended early when the Australian lost control of his McLaren going through the Hugenholtzbocht banked corner.

Hard into the barrier with the rear of the car as he lost control on the entry into Turn 3, he then swung around and hit the barrier with the front.

The driver, who suffered a small cut to his finger in the car, admits it was a driver error.

“I just went in a little bit hot, turned in a bit aggressively, and unfortunately found the wall,” he told the media including PlanetF1.com.

“A shame and unfortunate to give the guys a massive amount of work but hopefully we will bounce back and have a good day.

“It was going to happen at some stage, of course, you never want it to.

“Around here, especially in that corner, you pay a big consequence if you overdo it.

“So I’ll try not to do it again and see what we can do for the rest of the weekend.”

In Piastri’s absence, his teammate Norris enjoyed a strong session as hetopped the timesheets by 0.023sahead of reigning World Champion Max Verstappen.

Piastri was encouraged by that, saying: “It’s clearly been a good day on Lando’s side, a quick FP2 for him.

“Even before (the crash) I was feeling quite good with the car, and the pace looked reasonable on the hard tyre.

“I think we can go into qualifying pretty confident although I’ve a few less laps under my belt and with a bit to learn.

“But definitely encouraging the car is looking quick.”

“I remember coming into Turn 3. I had already gotten into the corner and then saw Piastri, so it was either hit him or the wall,” Ricciardo explained after FP2.

“When I hit the wall, I didn’t have enough time to take my hands off the steering wheel, so the wheel came and hit my hand. It’s really unfortunate and frustrating, but I’ll try to recover as quickly as I can.”

Ricciardo will be replaced by Red Bull junior Liam Lawson for the rest of the weekend with the New Zealander making his F1 debut.
