Mick will ‘talk to every top team’ when contract ends

Mick Schumacher says it is important to “talk to every top team” as he begins the last season of his Haas contract.

The 23-year-old signed forHaasat the end of the 2020 season after weeks of speculation, but his two-year deal with the American team is set to expire following the conclusion of the 2022 campaign.

With Haas regularly taking up the 19th and 20th spots on the grid last year, the German’s talents behind the wheel have yet to be truly tested but with a name like Schumacher, he is always likely to be linked to the teams at the top end of the grid.

While a move to Ferrari seems unlikely with rumours Carlos Sainz has signed an extension to his contract, Schumacher has said he will talk to every top team.

“Of course it’s important to talk to every top team,” Schumacher said in Saudi Arabia,as reported by grandpx.news.

“First of all, it depends on my performance. The rest will follow from that.”

His performance is set to be tested this season, especially with the more experienced Kevin Magnussen alongside him.

While the returning driver shocked with a fifth-place finish in Bahrain, Schumacher missed out on the points in 11th.

But former F1 driver Christian Danner believes the competition with Magnussen provides him with the perfect platform to shine.

“Magnussen is a stroke of luck for Mick,” he told Bild newspaper. “The puppy protection is over. Now he has to show he can assert himself.

“That wasn’t an issue against [Nikita] Mazepin – every driver on the grid would have won that. Magnussen is a different calibre.

“Mick has to work his way up to be in front and that will increase his chances for 2023. It’s his last contract year and he has to promote himself.

Schumacher also said he had learnt a lot from his new team-mate.

“He just lets the car that is underneath him work. I can learn a lot from that,” said Schumacher.

“As a team-mate, he’s also very open. He has done long-distance races where he shared a car with other drivers. Together we will both get faster.”

The 23-year-old’s next test comes this weekend in Saudi Arabia as Haas look to build on their points haul from the opening round in Bahrain.
