Max Verstappen summoned before Belgian GP stewards

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has been summoned before the stewards at Spa-Francorchamps, following an alleged transgression.

Verstappen was summoned before the stewards at 19:15 local time in Belgium, with former racer Enrique Bernoldi on the panel of four.

Verstappen’s summons is on the grounds of an “alleged breach of Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code and non-compliance with Race Director’s Event Note (Item 12, Document 3) – Practice start infringement.”

The event notes for Belgium state: “For reasons of safety and sporting equity, at any time the pit exit is open, and practice starts are permitted to be carried out, any driver who wishes to perform a practice start must form up in a line and leave in the order they got there unless another car is unduly delayed.”

Verstappen is unlikely to be unduly unconcerned by the prospect of a potential sporting penalty, such as a grid drop,as it’s already confirmed he will serve a grid penalty for Sunday’s race. This is following the Dutch driver being fitted out with a fourth power unit, exceeding his permitted allocation of three for the year. Title rival Charles Leclerc will serve a similar penalty, as Ferrari have fitted him with a new power unit as well.

The Friday pacesetter currently hasseven penalty points on his superlicence, with the next points he’s scheduled to lose being the two he picked up for his collision with Lewis Hamilton at last year’s Italian Grand Prix. They will expire on 12th September.
