Max Verstappen said he believes there are too many races in the 2024 calendar which was announced this week.

Formula 1 unveiled the schedule for next year’s season with a record 24 races across 10 months.

That figure was the initial one penned in for the 2023 campaign but the Chinese and Emilia-Romagna Grands Prix were later cancelled, dropping it down to 22.

Verstappen, who has already driven in 172 races at the age of 25, believes the calendar for 2024 is too demanding.

“It’s too many for me at least,” he told media including PlanetF1.com ahead of the British Grand Prix. “We just have to deal with it.

“I think it’s a bit more logical the way it’s planned at least so I guess that’s better for everyone.”

McLaren’s Lando Norris was of a similar opinion, suggesting 20 races would be his ideal number for a year.

“Five, six,” he joked when asked by PlanetF1.com how many races he would like in a year. “24 is a lot. If I picked the perfect number, it’s probably closer to 20.

“But there are too many tracks that people want to go to.”

It is not just the drivers who face the pressure of 24 races in a year with hundreds of staff members travelling around the world to keep the sport going. Norris said the focus should be on them more than the drivers.

“It’s also [tough] for the lives of mechanics, engineers, everyone who travels. They’re away from families, kids and so on for so many days.

“It’s tougher for them [than for drivers] so I think when we talk about this, we speak more as voices for those than for ourselves.”

Norris put forward the suggestion of having 20 races in a year but with rotating venues.

“I think 20 but with rotating tracks. Sometimes you want to go to certain places in different years. You just can’t go to all the tracks that people want to go to, it’s as simple as that.

“So it’s nice to see they’ve put some effort into organising in a slightly better way but still, it’s tough.”
