‘Kevin Magnussen getting taste of own medicine after destroying Mick Schumacher’

Former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer believes Kevin Magnussen “destroyed Mick Schumacher’s career in Formula 1”, and the performances of Nico Hülkenberg at Haas are threatening to do the same to him.

Hülkenberg replaced Schumacher for 2023 as Haas opted for experience over youth to partner Magnussen for this season, and the German has gone on to dominate the qualifying battle between the pair in particular – starting ahead of Magnussen nine times in 12 races and being a regular feature in Q3.

While both Haas drivers have struggled in race trim so far this year, especially with tyre management, Surer believes Hülkenberg’s performances are placing Magnussen under pressure for his place in the sport.

Neither Haas driver has agreed a contract extension beyond this year as yet, but team principal Guenther Steiner has indicated that he would be willing to extend Hülkenberg’s stay with the team, admitting his “surprise” at how quickly he adapted when he joined.

While the race head-to-head between the two drivers is 6-6 heading into the summer break, the German has nine points compared to two for the Dane and the qualifying performance has been a big standout difference between the two of them.

Former Arrows and Ensign driver Surer believes Magnussen “lacks that little extra something” in comparison to his team-mate this year.

“Magnussen has destroyed Mick Schumacher’s career in Formula 1, and now Hülkenberg is destroying Magnussen’s,” Surer told Formel1.de.

“He’s experiencing the same thing that happened to Mick. It’s truly incredible.

“Magnussen, I expected him to perform at Hülkenberg’s level. He does that in the race, but not in qualifying. It’s evident that Hülkenberg is simply a natural talent.

“Kevin is a good driver, no doubt about it. But he lacks that little extra something, and I can’t say it’s due to a lack of motivation.

“However, if the car doesn’t improve, and it seems that’s the case, it’s also difficult to stay consistently motivated.”
