Mixed messages in Haas camp after latest warning of ‘alarm bells’ ringing

Nico Hulkenberg fears the “alarm bells are ringing” at Haas after his team-mate Kevin Magnussen suffered not one but two engine related stoppages during the British Grand Prix weekend.

That meant a complete change of all engine parts for the German ahead of the British Grand Prix weekend, putting him on the cusp of penalties.

For Magnussen, though, it proved to be a double issue at Silverstone as he ground to a halt in qualifying with Haas fitting an old ICE ahead of the grand prix.

That too failed, the Danish driver bringing out the Safety Car when he pulled over having suffered a sudden loss of power.

Hulkenberg admits he’s worried as penalties are looming.

“I think so,” he said when asked if the engine failures were a concern.

“I mean, I had a couple this year too, it definitely something where the alarm bells are ringing and it seems to happen more just on our team and car.

“So I think definitely we need to take it seriously and we need to investigate and find out why.”

Magnussen, however, insists he’s not overly concerned after all there is nothing he can do about it.

“And that’s not something I can have an influence on. So all I can do is stay focused and stay close to the team, try to help them find the next improvement.

“It’s part of racing. It’s been part of it from day one. So these things happen. And, yeah, I’m more focused on trying to move forward in terms of performance and find our way back into top 10.

“I couldn’t finish qualifying and couldn’t finish the race. So, obviously not my weekend.

“I’ve got to just stay focused, try to look for that next step of improvement. I think we are fighting a little bit too hard right now to get into the top 10.”

Haas have scored just 11 points this season, nine for Hulkenberg and two for Magnussen, to sit P8 in the Constructors’ Championship.
