Fernando Alonso hopes he and Aston Martin take “many, many lessons” from their struggles at Monza over the weekend, with the two-time World Champion taking his joint-worst result of the season on Sunday.

Alonso qualified 10th and could only cross the line ninth – matching his result at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July, with Aston Martin appearing well off the pace during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

Aston Martin’s pace drop-off combined with a surge in speed from Ferrari enabled the Scuderia to leapfrog the Silverstone-based team for third in the Constructors’ standings on Sunday, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc taking 27 points compared to just two for Alonso.

Alonso bemoaned a lack of pace underneath him in his AMR23, alongside “very low grip” which did not help matters during a “very demanding” Italian Grand Prix.

With that, he hopes to learn from it and for the team to bounce back at the next round.

“Yeah obviously many, many lessons we need to take from this race,” Alonso told media including PlanetF1.com after the race.

“We were not competitive, so that’s the main focus for us try to understand in this type of circuit with what we need to do different into the future, also next year when we come here.

“Race wise there is not much to talk [about], we were slow from the beginning to the end and [it was] not possible to fight better than ninth, so we take these points but hopefully many lessons.

“It is frustrating because it was a very demanding race mentally, physically, to drive the car that it was very low grip, very tricky to drive.

“所以对我来说,一个of the most difficult races of the year and it is the worst result. An anonymous race, no-one will remember this but I will do in my head because it has been a tough one.

“But as I said, hopefully good lessons that we take from here on the car or the data that we have from the race, and we’ll get better next time.”

When asked specifically what lessons need to be learned at Aston Martin, the two-time World Champion hopes to see the car’s characteristics looked at in regards to low-downforce tracks like Monza, as these layouts have appeared to be a “weakness” for the team.

“Well, I think the car and efficiency of the car maybe is not as high as it should be in this type of track that the drag level is very important, and it seems that has been our weakness,” he said.

“We know that now, we need to get better and bring some ideas.”
