F1 results: Timings from the Austrian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has taken a dominant win at the Red Bull Ring, having had to weather a strategic battle with the Ferrari drivers.

Leading off the starting grid, Verstappen set about establishing an early lead in his Red Bull as the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz tried their best to keep up – the Spaniard appearing to have more initial pace than his teammate, but unable to find a way past.

A Virtual Safety Car was deployed to cover Nico Hulkenberg’s retirement when the Haas expired at Turn 4, with the Ferraris opting to pit for fresh tyres under the slower pace.

Verstappen opted not to pit, losing position to both Ferraris when he pitted at half distance. He quickly caught back up on Sainz and retook second place, before setting off after the leading Leclerc and taking the lead again.

From there, he established a 24-second lead by Lap 69, pitting once again in order to take on fresh tyres and take the fastest lap point to take maximum points from his race after popping in a 1:07.012 on the final lap.

Leclerc took a comfortable second place, with Sergio Perez coming out on top of a terrific scrap with Carlos Sainz to take the final podium place.

Track limits were the biggest topic of the day, with several drivers being slapped with five-second penalties. These included Sainz and initial seventh-place finisher Lewis Hamilton – the seven-time World Champion’s team boss Toto Wolff having to get on the team radio in order toinstruct his driver to “just drive”as Hamilton appeared to get distracted by the penalty as he groused about others.

Lando Norris put in a tremendous drive in his upgraded McLaren to finish what was going to be fifth, but with a plethora of further track limit violations confirmed after the race by the stewards, following an Aston Martin protest, it meant the final order behind the top three was to shift around.
