Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll both drop grid positions for impeding

Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll were both handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding during Canadian qualifying.

Tsunoda may have thought he was in the clear having seen the first of his two alleged charges go by with no further action but it was another incident with Nico Hulkenberg that put him in the crosshairs of the stewards.

It was an incident that started when Tsunoda went wide going into turn 10 and in his attempt to get back onto the track, he impeded Hulkenberg.

The stewards noted that even if Tsunoda believed he was still on his flying lap, his time at that point was approximately three seconds slower than his previous lap time.

The stewards instead suggested he should have abandoned his lap and kept off the racing line, which would have avoided any impeding.

The penalty sends Tsunoda down to 19th with only Zhou Guanyu behind him.

Stroll will also be starting further back than his qualifying position having also been found guilty of an impeding infringement, this time involving Esteban Ocon.

The Canadian’s defence was that he had no choice but to stay on the dry racing line as he was running with cold slicks.

Stroll argued that if he moved off the line, he would have crashed but the stewards felt his team should have warned him of Ocon’s presence so that he could have reduced his speed between turns 7 and 8 and allowed the Frenchman past.

As a result, Stroll moves further down the order and will start P16 which was Tsunoda’s former spot.

Earlier, Carlos Sainz was also handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Pierre Gasly on the final lap of the circuit. The incident sent the Alpine driver out in Q1 and prompted him to call for Sainz to be banned.
