Strong interest in Nyck de Vries emerges after ‘brutal’ Red Bull sacking

Guillaume Le Goff, the manager of Nyck de Vries, says there is interest in the Dutchman across several racing series, including Formula 1.

De Vries is taking time away from the spotlight to come to terms with his brutal sacking by Red Bull after just 10 rounds of the F1 2023 campaign spent with their junior team AlphaTauri.

Many suspected that this decision marks the end of De Vries’ career as a full-time F1 driver after struggling to impress in the lacklustre AlphaTauri AT04, but perhaps that is not the case?

Nyck de Vries still attracting Formula 1 interest

Le Goff is in charge of plotting out where De Vries goes from here in his career, and while the Frenchman did not reveal the capacity of the interest in De Vries from within Formula 1, he said it exists.

Mercedes’ trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin recently revealed that he has been in touch with De Vries, who formerly served as a simulator and reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team, while also winning the 2020-21 Formula E World title with them.

“There is plenty of interest in Nyck,” Le Goff toldFormule1.nl. “I’ve had quite a few calls in the last week.

“Endurance, Le Mans, GTs, Formula E, also Formula 1. We’ll see.”

2016 Formula 1 World Champion Rosberg suspects that if it were not for Daniel Ricciardo’s presence within the Red Bull fold, then De Vries would have been given the chance to complete the season, rather than “brutally” receive the boot before the summer break.

Ricciardo, who had been serving as Red Bull’s sim and reserve driver, impressed the team in his Pirelli tyre test at Silverstone following the British GP, paving the way for Red Bull to send him to AlphaTauri in De Vries’ place for the remainder of the F1 2023 campaign.

“Christian Horner [Red Bull team principal] said ‘we’re only interested in Nyck if he looks to be like the world class we’re looking for to potentially come to Red Bull Racing,'” said Rosberg on theSky F1 podcast.

“And they came to the conclusion that ‘yes, Nyck can be a great Formula 1 racer or whatever, but you’ll just never be what we’re looking for to potentially have him in Red Bull Racing, and then it’s just not of interest for us, and we have this opportunity with Ricciardo at the same time’.

“I mean, certainly that was decisive in the decision to release Nyck. If it wasn’t for Ricciardo there, Nyck surely would have finished the season.

“But there was that opportunity to put Daniel back in the car and evaluate him if perhaps they could find the old Daniel once again, and not the Daniel they saw at McLaren.”

Ricciardo enjoyed a strong re-debut with AlphaTauri in Hungary, qualifying and finishing P13, the Aussie an innocent factor in a collision at the race start which he felt cost him the chance to score points.
