Red Bull express ‘surprise’ that rivals still do not understand their key weapon

While Red Bull have been lauded for their Drag Reduction System [DRS] efficiency, technical director Pierre Wache says it is “crazy” that this still has not been figured out by their rivals.

The Red Bull RB19 has picked up where the RB18 left off, though this latest Red Bull masterpiece has taken the team to even greater heights of dominance so far in F1 2023.

12 rounds of the campaign have now come and gone, each one resulting in victory for Red Bull, who on a run of 13 victories in succession, have surpassed the previous record of 11 which had been set by McLaren back in 1988.

Red Bull thought their DRS would be figured out by now

With Red Bull and their star driver Max Verstappen now well on the way to further Championship success in F1 2023, the prospect of Formula 1’s first undefeated season remains very much on, and judging by their relentless form so far this season, it is hard to see who could stop Red Bull pulling it off.

Dubbed the “super-duper DRS” by Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz, an aid which has had rival cars compared to F2 machinery thanks to the way a Red Bull has breezed past, it is a key weapon which continues to floor rivals, though Red Bull are not sure why.

Speaking toMotorsport.com, Wache said: “The crazy thing is that people are talking about it two years after we introduced it.

“We had hundreds of tests by the FIA to see if we had used a trick or something, and people [even recently] don’t understand why on high downforce tracks the advantage disappears.

“Okay, that means they haven’t been able to understand it yet. And that surprises us a lot.”

Red Bull are 256 points clear ofnearestrivals Mercedes at the top of theConstructors’ Championship, while Verstappen holds a 125-point Drivers’ Championship lead over team-mate Sergio Perez.

His buffer over the highest ranked non-Red Bull driver, that being Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, stands at 165 points.
