Max Verstappen and Ted Kravitz hatch a plan for broken Hungary trophy

Sky F1 pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz is lobbying for Max Verstappen’s broken Hungary trophy to make it to the Red Bull trophy cabinet, and if not, Verstappen joked he may send it over to Lando Norris instead.

The Norris reference is of course due to the fact that the Brit was the one who broke it, albeit not intentionally.

With Verstappen winning the Hungarian GP and Norris finishing P2, the latter’s trademark podium celebrations would go very wrong as the impact of him hitting the bottle on the top step of the podium caused Verstappen’s trophy to fall off and smash.

The awkward situation has been salvaged, with the creators of the unique porcelain trophy, Herendi Porcelain, creating a new editions to send Verstappen’s way, while Norris has apologised for the accidental breakage of the original.

“I do want to apologise for it,” he told media including PlanetF1.com ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. “I obviously had no intention in ever doing such a thing.

“And I know how much it means to the Hungarians and is part of their culture and so forth.”

As for the broken one, when Sky F1’s Kravitz spoke to Verstappen ahead of the Belgian GP, he proposed that it still takes its place in the ever-growing Red Bull trophy cabinet back at Milton Keynes.

“I have an idea that it would be quite cool for Christian [Horner, Red Bull team principal] to put the broken trophy, as it is now, in two pieces in the big trophy cabinet in Milton Keynes, are they going to do it?” Kravitz asked Verstappen.

”我没说话n about it, I mean we’re getting a new one, they’re making a new one, so I honestly don’t know what’s happening with the broken one,” Verstappen replied.

But, if Kravitz’s plan cannot come to fruition, then Verstappen joked he could send the damaged trophy to its destroyer Norris.

“Maybe I can send it to Lando,” he said with a smile.

Max Verstappen confident come rain or shine

The weather at Spa-Francorchamps is always unpredictable, but with the drivers arriving to a rain-soaked scene on Thursday, there is growing concern that the FP1 session on Friday may not go ahead with heavy rain forecast to continue falling.

That would be particularly troublesome for the drivers as the Belgian GP weekend is taking place with the sprint format in use, meaning that is the only practice sessions which the drivers will have before qualifying.

The rain looks set to become more showery as Friday progresses and into the remainder of the race weekend, but whatever the weather, Verstappen is confident of his chances after claiming seven wins in a row at the wheel of the RB19, with Red Bull claiming a record 12th win on the trot in Hungary.

“The weather looks quite interesting with a lot of rain, but from our side, we know that the car is quick,” said Verstappen.

“And hopefully we can find a good compromise between possible rain or dry on Sunday.”
