Max Verstappen gave Lando Norris a “red card” and joked that the Brit smashing his Hungary trophy will be coming out of McLaren boss Zak Brown’s pocket.

While Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was the one to start from pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he could not turn that into a podium finish, never mind what would have been a record-breaking ninth win at the Hungaroring.

Instead Verstappen took his seventh win in a row and Red Bull’s 12th, his team therefore breaking McLaren’s record streak which had stood since 1988, and Verstappen did so with his biggest winning margin of the season as he crossed the line almost 34 seconds ahead of McLaren driver Norris.

But, as the pals sprayed the champagne on the podium, Norris’ trademark bottle celebration went horribly wrong and resulted in Verstappen’s victory trophy being smashed to pieces.

Norris, speaking in the post-race press conference, had jokingly pinned the blame on Verstappen, saying he placed the trophy “too close to the edge”.

“Yeah, just hold it,” he added. “It fell over I guess. Not my problem it’s his.”

And the Sky F1 cameras would capture a jovial exchange between the pair in the TV pen as Norris faced the music over his actions.

“You said it was my fault? I give you a red card,” Verstappen joked to the Brit.

“I will go to Zak [Brown, McLaren CEO] because he has got some spare money for the personnel in the team, so he can spend it on a trophy.”

All joking aside, it was a crucial test passed for Norris and McLaren at the Hungarian GP, as team and driver travelled to a venue in the Hungaroring which was not expected to suit the vastly-improved McLaren MCL60 anywhere near as well as Silverstone.

It looks though like their sudden surge after upgrades were introduced across the Austria and British rounds have truly delivered, with Norris making it back-to-back P2 finishes, his first consecutive appearance on the podium in his Formula 1 career.
