Lando Norris shatters Max Verstappen’s Hungary GP trophy as celebrations go wrong

Lando Norris may have some explaining to do after his Hungary podium celebrations left Max Verstappen’s victory trophy in pieces.

As Red Bull chased a record 12th victory in succession, the Hungaroring being the battleground with this achievement on the line, it appeared that the route to victory was not necessarily a clear one as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton pipped Verstappen to pole position.

The far-improved McLaren team were also a potential threat as Lando Norris headed row two alongside Oscar Piastri.

As it turned out, there was no need for concern in the Red Bull camp, Verstappen putting an end to his recent habit of underwhelming starts to take the lead from Hamilton and dominate from there, winning the race by a margin of almost 34 seconds over Norris.

In all seriousness, Norris was rightly happy to secure consecutive P2 finishes, the first time he has collected back-to-back podium results in Formula 1.

“Tough race, not an easy one, especially with Checo [Perez] catching at the end,” he said after the race.

“But he didn’t have enough pace to catch up so I’m happy. I had to fight for it a little bit in the beginning, I got screwed over in Turn 1, but another podium for us and for McLaren, which is amazing.

“We’re very happy with the progress we’ve made. To go from where we were like four or five races ago, certainly to get out of Q1 sometimes to fighting for poles and fighting for podiums, we’ll take it for now and our time will come later on in the year.”

Norris has now moved ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in theDrivers’ Championshipto P8, only 20 points behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
