Max Verstappen calls ‘bullsh*t’ on Toto Wolff’s Red Bull teammate destruction theory

Max Verstappen says “bullsh*t” to Toto Wolff calling his advantage over Sergio Perez “odd”, which once again raised questions about Red Bull’s favouritism.

Racing from ninth on the grid to first at the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen has been untouchable since that Sunday when he overtook Perez on the track to win the race despite the Mexican driver lining up on pole position.

Racing to nine wins on the trot, the reigning World Champion has dominated grands prix as he’s taken one win after the other and often by double digits.

Even Perez in the second Red Bull hasn’t been able to keep pace, he hasn’t finished within 10s of Verstappen since Miami.

Wolff believessuch an advantage is “odd”.

He said: “Checo’s not an idiot. We have seen in all these years Checo is a grand prix winner, multiple grand prix winner, and he was at Racing Point, so I cannot comprehend [it].”

Going on to say that Verstappen had “destroyed every single teammate that was with him”, Wolff added: “But I haven’t heard any obvious explanations. But yeah. Odd.”

Wolff’s comments were put to Verstappen on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix, a race in which the 25-year-old could make history with a record-breaking 10th win on the trot.

“Bullsh*t comments,” he told the media including PlanetF1.com’s Thomas Maher. “It’s not like that.

“I mean, I just drive the car I get to the fastest way possible. I’m not there to tell the guys to give me more front-end, because that’s how I like it.

“I’ll just say ‘Design me the fastest car, and I’ll drive around that.’

“Every single year it’s just different, every car drives a little bit different.

“People will say what is your driving style? My driving style is not something particular, I adapt to what I need for the car to go quick.”

Last time out in Zandvoort, Verstappen matched Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine successive wins with Fernando Alonso saying whathe is achieving with Red Bull is “underestimated”because winning in “dominant manner in any sport is so complicated.”

Verstappen agrees but insists it doesn’t faze him as he doesn’t need recognition from others.

“I’m not out there to try and prove anything really like I’m just there to do the best I can with the material I have,” he said.

“And probably also people they don’t know what’s going on within the team, and how difficult it is when you have a very good car to deliver what we are doing as a team and to win basically every race so far.

“Some people also they can’t appreciate when somebody is constantly doing a good job, I think. And I’m not talking about myself only, just the whole team operation.

“I am just there to do my job. I’m not there to be recognised as other people recognise what I’m doing.”
