Lando Norris: ‘Red Bull have the quickest car, why are they complaining?’

Lando Norris was having none of Red Bull’s complaints about track limits, arguing they had enough speed to well avoid the end of the kerbs.

Track limits were the two buzz words of the day in Austria as a total of 47 laps were deleted during the qualifying session.

It would prove to have disastrous consequences for the likes of Sergio Perez who thought he had broken his streak of non-Q3 appearances only to be sent out when the stewards deleted his time.

Perez, alongside team-mate Max Verstappen, were the two most vocal critics of the track limits rule, one that has been enforced much more strictly since 2022, and the Mexican said “what a f**king joke with the track limits” after his exit.

Norris though, who made the most of the new McLaren upgrades to qualify P4 despite having six of his own laps deleted, said Red Bull have enough speed to avoid the trap.

“They have the quickest car, why are they complaining?” he said with a smile to Sky Sports F1.

“It’s been the same here for a number of years so I wouldn’t say it’s any different. It’s just we’re drivers so we always complain and it’s just so easy to do which is the issue.

“You don’t want to be thinking about it every single corner but there are compromises. You have to tell yourself to lift off and you never want to do it ever but at times I feel the Red Bull is too quick to lift off and lose a tenth.”

Norris bemoaned an error in his final flying lap which he believed would have been enough to snatch P3 away from his old McLaren team-mate Carlos Sainz.

“It’s just difficult to commit. The last corner is a very tricky corner because you’re kind of on the entry kerb, which makes the car very nervous,” Norris explained. “And I just missed the apex by a little bit and as it compresses, if you miss it, you understeer so badly.

“我只是变得满目疮痍myself and I thought I was over the track limits and I just had to back out of it. So it definitely cost me P3 which I’m a bit annoyed by because I would have loved to beat Carlos but I’m happy.”
