F1 starting grid: What is the grid order for the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix?

Max Verstappen stormed his way to Japanese Grand Prix pole as first-time Suzuka visitor Oscar Piastri secured a spot on the front row.

Having topped every free practice session, Verstappen had already put the writing on the wall for his rivals, indeed delivering on that threat by claiming pole for the Japanese Grand Prix by more than half a second.

Piastri also made himself a major talking point for all the right reasons though, denying his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris a spot on the front row. Let us then run through the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix starting grid in full.

Max Verstappen dominates in Suzuka

Down a set of new softs, that did not stop Verstappen as his one-lap assault through Q1 and Q2 set the stage for him to blow the competition away come Q3, 0.581s up on Piastri as they prepare to share the front row.

Piastri’s McLaren team-mate Norris heads row two, with Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari for company.

It is Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez who is P5 on the grid after an underwhelming qualifying display, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz is P6.

An all-Mercedes row four follows with Lewis Hamilton ahead of George Russell, while Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso complete the top 10.

Liam Lawson, who now knows he will not race for AlphaTauri full-time next season, will look to join team-mate Tsunoda in the points come Sunday as he shares row six with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.

Behind them it is Alex Albon ahead of Gasly’s Alpine team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Kevin Magnussen leads row seven in the Haas alongside Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas, while it is a disappointing P17 on the grid for Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll who shares row eight with Nico Hulkenberg.

Zhou Guanyu and Logan Sargeant, the latter crashing out of qualifying in Q1, will complete the grid.
