Carlos Sainz ensured Ferrari ended Friday on top at Monza in front of their Tifosi, with Lando Norris scoring an impressive P2 for McLaren.

Just 0.019s split the former team-mates come the end of FP2, with Max Verstappen having failed to deliver a representative qualifying run, that the trigger for his latest spat with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.

It was a session meanwhile to forget for Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll.

Carlos Sainz and Ferrari lead the way

Stroll brought out the red flags just minutes into the session, reporting a complete loss of power out of the Ascari chicane and parking the Aston Martin AMR23 at the side of the track, the last thing he needed having given up his seat to Aston Martin reserve Felipe Drugovich for FP1.

Verstappen soon went about setting the pace, armed with the medium compound tyre, once the session resumed, but by halfway it was Ferrari on top courtesy of Sainz, all while Lewis Hamilton was complaining of his Mercedes setup, boxing for alterations despite Mercedes expressing concerns this would compromise their run plan.

Verstappen’s race engineer Lambiase had the same concerns when the Dutchman was determined to make another qualifying sim attempt, ‘GP’ bluntly replying: “It’s not qualifying” and hearing “yeah but I want to have a proper read” in response as their latest tiff played out.

There were bigger dramas for Perez as he spun off at Parabolica, triggering the red flags with less than 10 minutes to go and wrecking the race runs for his peers, as Sainz ended FP2 at the head of the pack.
