F1 results: 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix results and standings
Here are the complete results from the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, where Max Verstappen romped to another victory for Red Bull.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has taken a dominant victory at the Hungaroring, converting his second-place grid slot into his seventh consecutive race victory of the 2023 F1 season, and securing a new F1 record with Red Bull taking 12 consecutive F1 victories.
Lining up behind former title rival Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes, the eagerly-anticipated duel that qualifying had set up amounted to nothing as Verstappen stormed off the line to seize the lead by holding the inside line into Turn 1.
Max Verstappen storms into the lead at start of Hungarian GP
Hamilton’s start wasn’t amazing, with the British driver falling down to fourth through the opening corners as the McLarens piled on the pressure with Oscar Piastri moving up to second and Lando Norris to third.
Verstappen set about establishing a comfortable lead up front, pulling away from Piastri and Norris as Hamilton held gamely on behind them.
An undercut attempt from Norris worked out well for the McLaren driver to move up to second ahead of Piastri, with the Australian having to change his focus from looking ahead to scanning his mirrors as Red Bull’s Sergio Perez put in a stellar recovery drive from the midfield.
Perez put in some aggressive overtakes during the race, including getting his elbows out against George Russell and Piastri en route to third place as an undercut at his final pitstop moved him ahead of Hamilton.
Verstappen came home at the end of the 70 laps more than 30 seconds clear of Norris, with Sergio Perez coming home in third. The Mexican had initially looked like he would close up and challenge Norris for second but spent the final laps looking in his mirrors to watch out for the hard-charging Hamilton as the Mercedes came alive in the final stint.
Piastri finished fifth, ahead of Charles Leclerc in sixth – the Ferrari driver was demoted to seventh at the chequered flag as a result of a five-second time penalty due to being found to have sped in the pitlane entering for his final stop.
George Russell thus took sixth after a spirited drive in which he overtook Carlos Sainz in the closing laps as the Spaniard came home in eighth. The two Aston Martins rounded out the points finishers by taking ninth and 10th with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, respectively.
