F1 2022 results: Italian Grand Prix – Race (Monza)

Max Verstappen broke the hearts of Ferrari’s Tifosi as he beat pole-sitter Charles Leclerc to the Italian Grand Prix win, the race ending behind the Safety Car.

Ferrari threw the dice early in the race when they gambled on an early pit-stop for Leclerc, moving him from soft tyres to mediums in a ‘free’ stop under Virtual Safety Car conditions.

But that ultimately resulted in a two-stopper for the Monégasque driver, Leclerc exiting the pits after his second stop 20 seconds behind Verstappen.

Unable to chase down Verstappen, it looked as if he may have been thrown a lifeline by a late Safety Car as Daniel Ricciardo broke down at the side of the track, both Verstappen and Leclerc pitting.

但随着Ricciardo的车斯图ck in gear and the marshals unable to push it to safety, the laps counted down behind the Safety Car. Race Control ran out of laps to get the race restarted, Verstappen taking the win ahead of Leclerc.

George Russelladded to his tally of podium finishes with third place, the Mercedes driver finishing ahead of Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton, that duo having lined up P18 and 19 respectively.

Sergio Perez, Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly were next in line ahead of Nyck de Vries. The surprise debutant,the Dutchman in at Williams replacing Alex Albon for the weekend, lined up P8 and spent most of the grand prix fighting for a points-paying position before crossing the line P9 ahead of Zhou Guanyu.

Kevin Magnussen received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. He took that in his one pit-stop of the afternoon, the Haas driver finishing down in 16th place.

Sebastian Vettelwas the first retirement of the grand prix, the former Italian GP winner reporting he had lost power. He stopped at the side of the track, the VSC out for his stricken Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso, another past Italian GP winner, was next out, pulling into the pits to park his Alpine. A few laps earlier he had complained about the engine.

Lance Stroll joined the list on lap 41, a double DNF for Aston Martin, with Ricciardo breaking down at the side of the track on lap 48.
