Kvyat ‘got distracted’ just before crashing

Daniil Kvyathas admitted that he was distracted with switches on his steering wheel in the build-up to his race-ending crash at Silverstone.

TheAlphaTauridriver became the third casualty of the British Grand Prix on Lap 13when he crashedinto the barriers at Maggots, destroying his car.

He immediately apologised to his team on the radio afterwards and has now confirmed that he lost control as he was distracted by other tasks.

“I still don’t understand what happened, I was changing a lot of switches on the steering wheel and got distracted. The red kerb just spun the car around completely, I didn’t expect that,” he said in the paddock after the incident.

“But I wasn’t looking really on the track at that moment, we were having some issues on the car and I had to change a lot of parameters on the screen and it was very, very distracting.”

Despite his self-admitted error, TV cameras suggest that his rear tyre was in fact deflating, meaning that the crash wasn’t his fault.

Either way, after starting in P19 due to a grid-penalty, the Russian made an excellent start to the race and was running just behind team-mate Pierre Gasly when he crashed.

Given this, he feels confident that he could have ended up in the top 10 if he kept running.

“I think points were definitely possible, I was having a great race,” he added.

“It’s very, very f***ing disappointing to be honest, but that’s life.”

Given that Gasly finished the race in P7, Kvyat certainly could have taken P10 at the very least. Instead, he picked up no points and is now 11 points behind the Frenchman in the Driver’s Championship.
